It's a rare musician who knows the power in simplicity, and local singer-songwriter Sally Shuffield-with her easy melodies and wonderfully unaffected voice-is one of them. Her second album was produced by Runaway Truck Ramp's Greg Schochet, and it features guest appearances from locals Pete Wernick, Sally Van Meter, Christian Teele and Celeste Krenz. "Ties That Bind" is a simple, acoustic, folk-bluegrass record with a nice balance of Iris Dement/Nanci Griffith-style contemporary material and songs that sound as if they're straight out of the classic folk music songbook. Especially winning: the noncommittal song "All Roads Lead to You" (chorus: "I think I kinda love you") and the lush, atmospheric "Still Stands Time."
